NiTinol Wire Was Discovered by the Navel Ordinance Laboratory

A discovery was made when the Navel Ordinance Laboratory recognized the potential of mixing nickel and titanium wire together. They discovered that this type of wire resulted in two different wire variations, allowing for both shape memory and super elasticity. The resulting product was called NiTinol wire, after the type of metals used to create the wire, and the agency, which discovered it.

The difference between regular wire and NiTinol wire is the ability of NiTinol to return to its previous shape. The wire can be bent, angled and deformed without damaging it. In order to return it to its original shape, heat is applied. The amount of heat required depends on the type of NiTinol being used. For instance, super elastic wire only requires a small amount of heat.
