Small diameter 304 hypodermic tubing is full hard, welded and drawn to tight tolerances and is an effective component for applications requiring strength, uniformity, and corrosion resistance. The 304 is a high-performance alloy and the most popular alloy for use in non-implantable medical devices. It possesses a minimum of 18% chromium and 8% nickel with a maximum of 0.08% carbon. It is in the chromium-nickel austenitic alloy family, and because of its low carbon, it is preferable over 302 for applications requiring welding. Hypodermic tubing gauge sizes are based on the Birmingham Gauge, also known as Stubs Iron Wire Gauge, which references the outside diameter. As wall thickness changes for a gauge size, the inside diameter changes while the outside diameter remains constant. Component Supply stocks hypotubes in standard 30" and 60" lengths in multiple wall thicknesses: regular wall, thin wall, and extra thin wall. No minimum order is required, but quantity breaks are available for 60" lengths. Material certificates are available upon request for $10.
Markets & Applications▼
Our hypodermic tubing serves research and development in variety of markets including oil and gas, chemical processing, chromatography, electronics, aerospace, and medical.
Medical markets, include:
- Catheter products/Cath labs
- Biopsy devices
- Perclose (peripheral closure) devices and VNUS (varicose closure)
- Blood glucose collection devices
- Minimally-invasive surgery
- Interventional therapies
Hypotubes are frequently used in air, water, oil, natural gas and chemical circuits. A variety of cannula types are made from hypodermic tubing including sharps, blunt, non-coring, and deflective.
Custom Fabrication & Contract Manufacturing ▼
The fabrication division of Component Supply, CS Custom Fab, offers many secondary operations for hypodermic tubing. Based on customer drawings, capabilities include:
- Cutting: precision, burr-free (standard +/- 0.005" tolerance)
- Bending: to customer-specified bend radius
- Beveling: to customer-specified angle
- Welding: laser welding for assemblies
- Notching: according to customer drawing
- Flattening: according to customer drawing
- Custom Needles: hypotubes and either stainless steel or polypropylene hubs
Standard shop minimums generally begin at $150, but please contact us for a quote specific to your project's use of hypodermic tubing. Consistent with our commitment to research and development, we keep order minimums low for both standard lengths and fabricated parts. Material certificates are available upon request for $10.
